What’s in a Gingerbread Latte?

This Christmas latte gets its name because it has a festive and slightly spicy kick, just like gingerbread. It owes much of its popularity to the Starbucks gingerbread latte — but we honestly think this version tastes better, and we like knowing exactly what goes into our coffee.

This gingerbread latte recipe uses a base of unsweetened vanilla almond milk, but coconut milk or cashew milk would also work. If you’re using cow’s milk, we’d recommend adding a splash of vanilla extract for extra warmth and flavor.

For the hit of caffeine in this latte, choose an organic, fair trade certified coffee (our favorites are here!) or snag a bottle of organic cold brew for your gingerbread coffee. If caffeine doesn’t sit well with you, you can also skip the coffee in this recipe to make something more like a steamer.

The gingerbread flavors in this latte come from warming spices like ginger, nutmeg, and cinnamon, which are rich in trace nutrients and antioxidants. They also contain naturally warming and sweet flavors, which can even help curb a sweet tooth. Opt for organic spices at the grocery store or online, and make sure to replace them every year. Spices don’t have as long of a shelf life as we tend to think!

This gingerbread latte is sweetened with a pinch each of blackstrap molasses and maple syrup, two sweeteners that taste heavenly when combined. Blackstrap molasses is not as sweet as regular molasses, and it has the added benefit of being rich in a variety of vitamins and minerals including iron, B vitamins, magnesium, potassium, and calcium.

With so many flavors and spices, this gingerbread latte is exactly what you want to be drinking this holiday season. And it’s a perfect accompaniment for warm cookies — gingerbread cookies, of course!
