As an aesthetician, I know how important a professional facial is for healthy, glowing skin. But I always tell my clients that their skin is only as good as the work they put in between treatments. Since none of us knows when we’ll be able to go in for our next facial due to stay-at-home orders, it’s more important than ever to take good care of your skin at home. Luckily, many standard kitchen items make great DIY treatments, so you can take care of your skin even as the global pandemic rages on.
Since every person’s skin is different, the same mask might not be suitable across the board. The two below are some of my favorites. If you have normal to dry skin and need hydration – even if you suffer from acne – use the hydration mask. If your skin needs a detox from environmental pollutants, pollens, toxins, or debris from sweat or touching your skin, use the detox max. Either way, these mix-it-yourself masks are easy to recreate at home to keep your skin looking and feeling fresh.
Hydration Mask for Dry Skin
Spending a lot of time indoors means that you’re often stuck in a dry environment that zaps moisture out of your skin. As the weather heats up, AC will make that dryness even worse. This mask is a moisturizing multitasker: the vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that helps soothe irritation caused by dryness, while argan oil and avocado hydrate and strengthen the lipid barrier with omega fatty acids to prevent moisture from escaping the skin. Bonus: this mask makes an excellent hair treatment as well.
Ingredients (Makes ½ cup for single use):
- 1 teaspoon vitamin E
- ¼ cup avocado oil
- ½ avocado
- A few drops of argan oil
- 1 tablespoon glycerin
How To Use:
- Mix all the ingredients in a bowl to form a thick paste.
- Cleanse face with a gentle cleanser and pat skin dry.
- Apply a generous layer of the mask and leave on for about 15-20 minutes.
- Remove the mask with a warm washcloth.
- Finish with your favorite serums and lock it all in with moisturizer.
Detox Face Mask for Oily Skin
This mask is perfect for skin that’s showing signs of stress like acne and clogged pores. Maybe your sleep schedule has been thrown off, your diet has changed, or the stress of the news is wearing on you. This mask blends bentonite clay and activated charcoal to balance oil production and draw impurities out of the pores, while glycerin provides essential moisture.
Ingredients (Makes ½ cup for single use):
- 4 tablespoons bentonite clay
- 2 ounces water
- 1 tablespoon glycerin
- 1 tablespoon black charcoal
How To Use:
- Mix all the ingredients in a bowl to form a thick paste.
- Cleanse face with a gentle cleanser and pat skin dry.
- Apply the mask in an even layer and wait for it to dry.
- Remove the mask with a warm washcloth.
- Finish with your favorite serums and lock it all in with moisturizer.
