Meatless Monday Roundup: 5 Tempeh Recipes
Have you gotten to know tempeh yet? This fermented soy product is a protein-rich choice that’s great for Meatless Monday, particularly now that grilling season is upon us. We’ve gathered together some of our favorite tempeh recipes so that you can give this ingredient a try.
Tempeh is usually sold in blocks, similar to its cousin tofu. But unlike tofu, tempeh is a less processed product, and it tends to contain more protein and fiber. Its chewy consistency and ability to pick up other flavors makes it a great choice for Meatless Monday, so consider adding some tempeh recipes to your repertoire this week.
The first contender for the place at your Meatless Monday table is a delicious Indonesian dish known as sambal goreng, depicted above. The dish is a combination of tempeh, long bean and spices with a flavorful sauce made from coconut milk and popular regional seasonings including lemongrass, tamarind, and galangal ginger. A flavorful dish that’s particularly delicious when served with plain rice.

A simple honey and sesame glaze is a great way to let tempeh shine. This glazed tempeh recipe combines orange, soy, sesame, honey and fresh ginger for a flavorful sauce that adheres perfectly to the soy protein. As an added plus, serve the glazed tempeh alongside fresh, seasonal vegetables, or even toss the veggies in with the tempeh for a more colorful version of this tasty dish.

Tempeh makes an excellent substitute for a burger or veggie burger. The soy steaks can easily be grilled to make a tasty tempeh sandwich that you can serve with a variety of toppings. Traditional burger fixings like lettuce, tomato and onion are great, but adding a bit of sweet corn, some basil, or even a homemade basil mayonnaise (the recipe is an added bonus in the link above) you’ll make meat-eating guests jealous.

A burger is far from the only grilled tempeh you can serve this season. Tempeh brochettes are fun and easy to prepare, and they’re particularly delicious when you take the time to soak them in a summer marinade. Olive oil, soy sauce, lime juice, ginger and mustard make for the perfect combination of salty, acidic and sweet flavors, with just a hint of spice. Skewer the tempeh with vegetables for an easy al fresco main that can be eaten with your hands!

The popularity of using tempeh as a meat substitute has somewhat waned in favor of highlighting the distinct advantages of the natural protein. But some recipes where tempeh replaces meat are far too good to pass up. These tempeh hot wings are the perfect example. Coated in a spicy sauce made with margarine instead of butter, these wings have the added benefit of being completely vegan.
